November 6, 2011, Sun.

We got to Charleston City Marina around 2:45 on Wed. We cleaned up the boat, ordered a pizza for dinner. Then Barb & Ken from Plumpuppet and Katja and Geoff from Blue Planet stopped by. They got in earlier and went into town. Gave Barb her shrimp from Georgetown and then they went back to their boats to get ready to leave the next AM. We are staying for four nights. Thursday, we got wash done and Bob changed fuel filters. On Friday we met Chris & Susan from Forever Friday in town for lunch. They stayed at the Maritime Marina, which is the opposite side of town from the Charlestown City dock. We need to try it sometime. Then we walked to Harris Teeter, stocked up on more food and called the Marina van to pick us up. Once we got back to Jany K, my sister Judy and brother-in-law Bob and nephew Drew had checked into the house they rented in town and then came over to the Marina. We had dinner at Magnolia’s. On Saturday Judy, Bob and Drew came to the boat for lunch, then we walked around town. Then the guy’s went back to the house and Judy and I shopped King St.. We had Dinner at Lana’s, also very good. Today we’re leaving for Beaufort and and Judy, Bob and Drew will meet us there on Monday.

November 8, 2011, Tues.

 Today we left Beaufort S.C. at 7:15 after a fun time in Beaufort and Charleston. I’m so glad that my sister, Judy, Bob and Drew got to spend some time with us in two of my favorite towns. We always have a good time together. We walked through Beaufort and I showed Judy the southern mansion that had the apartment that our parents lived in when our Dad was stationed here. My sister was a baby at the time and our Mom was pregnant with me. As I always say that’s what draws me to this town, cause I was conceived here. Hahaha  The house is now a beautiful renovated southern mansion and is privately owned, with a lot of history.

We had dinner at Plum’s which was good, but not as good as when we had dinner there back in May on our way north with Fred, Ginny, Rick and Tina.

We crossed the Savannah River today into Georgia at 11:35 AM, got into Kilkenny Marina around 4:00. A long day, about 80 miles.

November 9, 2011, Wed.

Another early morning, we left Kilkenny Marina at 7:15 for Brunswick. A quiet night in outback Georgia. The docks are wobbly as always, but they said they had a bad storm 

in October, which really made them a mess. Couldn’t tell by me, although they also said they just had the wood delivered to do them over. We’ll see, right, Fred and Gin! Hahaha

This morning when Bob started the motor, Boots looked at him and actually moaned. I think she’s had it with going early so many days, then stop for a few, then go again. She’s ready to get home, just look at her face in the picture. I think Bob and I are ready to spend some time at home too. We must be getting old, six months living aboard with only three weeks at home is getting to be old hat

November 10, 2011, Thurs.

We left Brunswick Landing Marina at 7:30. A nice night there after a big Welcome from Sherry, the dockmaster. It’s always nice stopping there. We left Banshee there for the month of December to go home for Christmas, then we drove our car back and left it there for a month till we could pick it up and bring it down to Florida. We might take Jany K there for the next hurricane season if we don’t go north.

We were hoping to meet up with Kathy and Earl from Seeker while we were there.  We met them at Brunswick in 2008, when we were there with Banshee and have kept in touch, but, both our schedules changed and they won’t be there till Saturday, so we’ll catch up in Vero.

Susan and Chris called from Forever Friday and they’ll be in Fernandina Beach, Florida for tonight. We’ll pick up a mooring there and catch up to them, then head to St. Augustine with them. We crossed into Florida at approximately 11:30 today. Getting closer to home!!!

November 11, 2011, Fri.

We left the mooring at Fernandina Beach around 7:30 AM, after a very windy night. A cold front came through in the afternoon, just after we got there and as we were blowing up the dinghy to go into town. We decided against taking the dinghy in, cause it’s a pretty long ride from the mooring field and I would get soaked. It’s just like it was when we were there with Banshee and I did get soaked trying to get into town. We were going to meet Chris and Susan from Forever Friday for dinner, but that will wait for St. Augustine. Around 10:00 PM the wind even got worse. They said it was 25 to 30 MPH out of the NW. There were 3 foot waves in the mooring field, we were really jumping in the water and the waves would slap the boat so hard, there was no sleeping. We both got up at 5:30 and turned on the generator and heat. The temperature dropped to the 40’s overnight. We put on our long underwear and bundled up for our trip down the ICW to St. Augustine.

November 13, 2011, Sun.

We left the mooring in St. Augustine around 7:45 AM for Halifax Harbor in Daytona. We were in St. Augustine for 2 nights. It was very nice. When we got to St. Augustine on Friday afternoon, we talked to Chris and Susan from Forever Friday. They picked up a mooring also. We were so tired from no sleep in Fernandina, that we decided to stay in and we would get together Saturday. After a good nights sleep we felt human again. The temperature went up and the wind died down for a beautiful day. We took the dinghy into town and met Chris and Susan. We walked around town and had lunch. It’s a great town for walking with plenty of shops and restaurants. We also walked into Flagler College, very old and beautiful with lots of history. Susan and I got into trouble. We walked into the dinning room to see the Tiffany stained glass windows. The guard promptly told us that was off limits and didn’t we see the 3 signs. We did, but we just thought we could peek in. I told Susan she’s a bad influence, you know I would never do anything like that on my own!! hahaha Later Chris and Susan came over and we had cocktails and a lot of laughs.

We didn’t get to meet up with Mike and Kimberly, they had a lot of family visiting. We’ll get together now that we’ll be home soon.

November 14. 2011, Mon.

We left Halifax Harbor Marina in Daytona at 7:30AM. It’s a nice marina, very big and a good stop to remember. We only stopped in Daytona one other time with Banshee and we anchored just off the ICW.

A short walk from the marina is the Chart House restaurant, were we met Chris and Susan for dinner. They are having their boat painted, so they’re at the marina next to Halifax for a couple weeks. We’ll catch back up when they’re in Vero and we’ll be home. Before Bob and I left for dinner, I was up on the flybridge on the phone, when this huge Heron came flying right at the front window. Thank goodness, it was zipped shut. It then landed on the bimini. I called Bob up, cause I know he wouldn’t believe it. He stood on the aft deck looking up eye to eye with it.. Bob couldn’t believe how big it was. He then hit the underneath of the bimini and it took off hollering. It sounded so prehistoric.

Tonight Cocoa Village Marina, then Vero, then home as long as the weather holds and before the next cold front comes through. Yeah!

November 15, 2011, Tues.

We left Cocoa Village Marina at 7:30 AM. It’s another good stop, nice people, bathrooms, laundry, and lounge. We walked into the village, but it was dark. It looks like a lot of shops and restaurants. After we were tied up in our slip and got the marina tour, the one breaker on the boat shut down. We had the air conditioner, water heater and battery charger on, which is the same as always. The manager of the marina, came and checked the plug and changed the breaker on the pedestal. At least it didn’t burn our cord. We then had a problem with the battery charger constantly running or a fan running, so we had to shut that down. Then to add to the excitement the CO detector that’s wired to the boat went off and we had to cut the wires to shut it off. Not Done Yet! A couple hours later the battery CO detector up front goes off. We tried new batteries, but that didn’t help, so we took the batteries out all together. Thank goodness I had another battery CO detector that worked. Don’t get it!

November 16, 2011, Wed.

We got to Vero Beach Municipal Marina around 2:00 on Tuesday and picked up a mooring, which was good, cause the wind really started kicking and trying to dock in a slip would not have been fun. We took the dinghy in to check in and fill up some water bottles. Then came back to the boat and deflated the dinghy, cleaned up the boat, the best we could. Had dinner, watched Dancing with the Stars and went to bed.

We left Vero around 7:30 AM for a short 27 miles to Nettles and home. We got into Nettles around 10:30 AM. When we were about two miles from home, Bob throttled up and we went up on plane and we were doing 14.4 knots. It was fun.

We are now home and boy it sure feels good after 6 months or so living on the boat, except for 3 weeks home in September. Although it’s bittersweet, knowing when we were coming from Vero, that we would be moving off the boat and wouldn’t be traveling everyday. We’re not sure what’s next, but hope to take some short trips with the boat this winter. Then decide what we’ll do next spring and summer. In the meantime lots of boat cleanup and condo projects. Bob’s most favorite things to do. Hahaha

 

Meeting New and Old Friends

October 31, 2011, Mon.  “Halloween”

We left Osprey Marina around 8:20 am after a nice 5 days. We’ve always liked Osprey, so protected. We left Banshee there to come home in 2009. A nice marina with nice people. One couple we met Joy and Hans are leaving their boat at Osprey for the winter and going home to Massachusetts’s, then coming back in the spring to head to the Bahamas. They had a car and took us to the CVS and food store. We met Ted and Sally on Amici a 44’ DeFever also. They’re heading to the west coast of Florida. Of course everyone we meet we give them our boat card and tell them to call when they’re in the area if they need a ride to the stores. If everyone calls, Bob will be running a taxi service, considering the amount of cards we’ve given out so far this trip, but that’s a good thing, getting to see everyone again. Our friends Barb and Ken on Plumpuppet came in on Sat. with their friends Katja and Geoff on Blue Planet. It was great spending time together. We had a lot of laughs. We met Barb and Ken in 2008 at Deltaville Va. when we took Banshee south. We’ve kept in touch and were excited to hear that they were coming south from Vermont this year. We’ll be meeting again in Charleston in a couple days.

November 2, 2011, Wed.

Today we left Boat Shed Marina in Georgetown, S.C. at 7:30 to go to Charleston. We stayed there two days. The last time we were here with Banshee, we walked into town, but it was dark and we just walked to the Rice Paddy restaurant with Norm and Nancy from True Loev. It was a nice restaurant, but not casual. When we walked in this time, we noticed there’s not much in stores, but a lot of other restaurants. We were going to eat at The River Walk Tuesday night, but we went to the Independent Fish Market to get fresh shrimp for Barb and Ken an ended up buying some for ourselves. Bob cooked the shrimp with pasta, garlic and herbs. It was very good and a lot cheaper @ $7.99 a pound for large.
We’ve been passing True Loev on the waterway this year and met up with them in Osprey Marina. It’s funny how we keep seeing the same boats as we did with Banshee. So many people do this every year.

Slowing Down!

October23, 2011, Sun.

We left Dowry Creek Marina around 7:30am. Yes, folks that’s AM, for all who think I sleep all morning. My new wake up time is now between 5:30 and 6:00 am. That’s right believe it or not, and sometimes we’re not leaving till 8:00 or 9:00. It’s sure easy to get into a bad habit. Hahaha!
It was a pretty morning. When we got to the ICW from the marina, we looked behind us to see about ten sailboats sailing with the sun just up behind them. When we got to the Pamlico it was nice and calm. But, then the Neuse River was another washing machine, with about 4 foot waves, plus a swell. It was one roller after the other, till we could finally turn southwest and get them behind us. Bob adjusted the trim tabs and then it was much better for the next 20 miles. When I went to check the girls, they were in their houses looking at me, like “What the Hell”. They are such troopers. The wonderful cocktail table fell over and my little brass lantern with the glass globe broke. Glass all over the place, but no fear Bob’s favorite table was fine.

Got to Morehead City Yacht Basin around 3:30 after about 72 miles. Nice marina with courtesy car ($10) and a great Harris Teeter nearby. Lot’s of big Sportfishing boats, cause we’re very near the inlet at Beaufort, North Carolina.

October 24, 2011, Mon.

Today we stopped at Beach House Marina in Surf City North Carolina. It was a long day today, fighting tides and had to wait for a half hour for the Onslow Beach Bridge. The bridge tender wouldn’t hold it even a minute. I guess cause it’s part of Camp LeJeune. We did about 56.5 miles today.

Once we got to the marina we walked to the beach, which is about three blocks. A typical seashore town, reminds me of the Jersey shore. We stopped here with Banshee in 2008.
We met people here who got stuck in the Erie Canal after Hurricane Irene. They had to have their boat trucked out and sent to Annapolis.

October 25, 2011, Tues.

We left Beach House Marina at 7:30 to catch the 8:00 Surf City Bridge opening. We had to circle for about 25 minutes, but Bob wanted to be sure to make it. The bridge tenders seem to be very precise with their opening times, more so than I remember.
We thought we couldn’t make the 10:00 opening of the Wrightsville Beach Bridge, so we tried slowing down for the 11:00 opening, but the current was just pushing us, always when you don’t want it. We ended up waiting almost an hour, which was a pain with the current. Some days it works and others no matter how you try to time it, it just doesn’t. We did however catch the tides right going down the Cape Fear river, we were cruising at 11 to 11.4 knots.
We got to Southport Marina and Mike who was our broker for Jany K gave us a slip for the night. We cleaned up the boat and us and then had drinks and dinner with Mike & Jenna. We had a nice night, although we did miss Rusty and Mandy not being there.

October 26, 2011, Wed.

We left Southport Marina at 8:00 and we got to Osprey Marina, Myrtle Beach around 5:00. We crossed into South Carolina at 11:45. It was a long 64 miles. There were a lot of no wake zones and had the tide against us most of the day. We fueled up and then settled into our slip, which is very nice and quiet. We are staying here for a few days to slow down. Judy and Bob and Drew are going to meet us in Charleston on Friday, the 4th, so we have a little time, cause we're only two days from Charleston.

 

October 21^st, 2011, Fri.

We stayed at Coinjock Marina till the fronts came thru and the winds calmed to 10’ to 15’. Forever Friday left early Wed. to try to beat the wind, which is easy for them. They’re a 50’ boat with twin engines and travel a lot faster than us. We’ll catch up again at some point. I don’t think Bob can watch Dancing with the Stars without Chris though and I will miss their joint commentary.
Thursday a bunch of the boats left thinking they would cross the Abermarle in 3’ to 4’ seas, but they got there and they were 5’ to 8’. Most of these are power boats with captains and they said it was bad. They closed the Alligator River Bridge because of the winds also. So now their back at Coinjock with us, plus new boats are coming in from the north. The marina says they’ll be rafting boats off the boats at the dock. There are more big boats then I ever remember, most are well over 45’. The 45’ power boat that was behind us is back and is behind us again, which is scary, cause he almost took off our swim platform and port side of our boat getting off the dock this morning.
Finally, things have calmed down and we’re leaving this morning. They didn’t end up rafting boats off the docks, but it was a full house, specially when the 90 some footer came in.Crossing the Abermarle Sound was OK. Some areas though, still had very confused 2’ seas. We got into the Alligator River Marina around 1:00 and gave Jany K a good scrubbing. It was a quiet evening and of course no TV stations or cell service, or WIFI. Just an outback place

We got into Dowry Creek Marina around 1:30. Calm, but partly cloudy and cool. The Alligator Pungo Canal was fine, although you could see a little damage to some docks at the southern end. The canal is more than 20 miles long and straight as an arrow. It runs a little southwest, so you start with scrub trees like at the shore, then the more west they get taller and greener.
Dowry Creek Marina always has a cocktail party or a pot luck dinner for transients. Tonight was pot luck, there was a boy who was celebrating his 13^th birthday today. It was very nice. We met a lot of people and finally met the people on two sailboats we’ve been passing for the past couple days. The one boat is a 30’ Hunter from Chicago and the other is a 42’ Beneteau from Sandusky, Ohio.

 

Finally out of the bay and in North Carolina

October 16^th, 2011, Sun.

We left Dozier’s in Deltaville, Va. finally after a week of meeting some very nice people. We hope to see them again in our travels. Susan & Chris from Forever Friday, who we met  watching Dancing with the Stars in the marina lounge are leaving Monday, so I’m sure we’ll meet up with them  along the way. Sarah & Brooks from Our Time are headed to DC and then down the ICW and will be going right by the condo on they’re way to the west coast of Florida, so hopefully we’ll catch up again also.

We had the water heater fixed on Thursday, but decided to wait for the rain, then the winds to calm from 20 to 25 and 3’ to 4’ seas. We had about 1’ to 2’ seas when we left, but then at Mobjack Bay and York River we had some 3’ to 4’ seas. It was like being in a washing machine, waves all different directions. We did have the tide with us, so we made good time, averaging 9 knots. When we got to Tidewater marina in Portsmouth, Va. we walked into town. It was nice with some historic homes and restaurants, etc. We got back to the boat and I wasn’t feeling well, so we had a so called dinner on board. Bob had Hot dogs and Beans, YUK. I had soft boiled eggs. HAHAHA

October 17^th, 2011, Mon

I’m still not feeling well, stomach cramps, so we decided to go to Atlantic Yacht Basin in Great Bridge, Va. just 12 miles, but we had 3 bridges and one lock. The bridges are closed from 6:30 am to 9:30 am and then 2 open on the hour and half hour and the one after the lock opens only on the hour. They also only lock boats through southbound on the half hour and northbound on the hour. So this takes some planning. We did good, we got the 10:30 opening on the first bridge and got to Atlantic Yacht Basin by noon. All I wanted to do was sleep. Hopefully tomorrow’s a better day.

October 18^th, 2011, Tues.

Feeling better today, at least I feel like I have a little energy, but still have stomach cramps. We decided to go to Coinjock N.C. There’s also a front coming again with rain and winds and we’ll probably hang here a couple days, cause next we’ll be crossing the Abemarle  and Alligator river, which are not friendly in higher winds. We learned this on other trips. Forever Friday pulled in also and we had dinner at the restaurant, then watched Dancing with the Stars eliminations on they’re boat. A fun night! We’ve only gone approximately 216 miles since leaving Knapps Narrows, including our trip to Annapolis with Fred and Ginny, still have 930 miles to go. We’re still early compared to when we left with Banshee, but probably we’ll start doing some longer runs when we leave here. We got the insurance changed and we can go as far as St. Mary’s, Ga. before Nov 1^st. which is a lot better than Hatteras.

 

October 7^th, 2011, Fri.

 We left Annapolis to go to Herrington Harbor South, and get slips for a good nights sleep. We tied up at the long dock by the beach. Walked around and showed Fred and Ginny the new inn and rooms and landscaping. It’s all been done over very nice, since we started going there every 4^th of July since sometime in the 90’s. Christy, Ray, Alicia and Lee have gotten a room there every 4^th and we would take the boat, with Tim and Heidi always a fun family weekend. I made Ginny’s recipe for Shepards Pie for dinner for all of us. Ginny made Chocolate pudding for dessert, which tasted really good. We played the dice game Farkel, beginners luck Ginny won after a fun game. Then a good nights sleep.

October 8^th, 2011, Sat.

Jany K and Dreamchaser left Herrington and now are officially heading south to Solomon’s. We decided to go to Zahnhisers Marina in Solomon’s. The museum was having a Patuxent River Festival. It was very nice. The museum was open and free. They had all kinds of things going on. The kids could make small wooden boats in the boat shed, they had music, crafts, free boat rides, even a wine tasting with local wines, which believe it or not we did not try. The museum had some very cool artifacts from Calvert Cliffs, plus history of the bay and speedboats that were built in Solomon’s in the 40’s and wooden boat building and more. A fun time. We then had cocktails on Dreamchaser and dinner at The Dry Dock restaurant at the marina.
This is our last night with Fred and Ginny. A sad time, we have been traveling with them and right next to them at Knapps since we left Nettles Marina in Fl. May 9^th. We’ll really miss them as we head south and they head north back to Knapps.

October  9^th, 2011, Sun.

We left Solomon’s this morning heading south to Deltaville, Va. and saying bye to Fred and Ginny and looking forward to seeing them in Florida. It was a calm day so crossing the Potomac was easy compared to most other crossings. We got to Dozier’s in Deltaville around 2:30, making good time with the tide. After we got into the marina, we realized the hot water heater was not working. We wanted to get to Norfolk before the nice weather window changed after Tuesday. There’s not much there though, in the way of working marinas, so we decided to have someone look at it here Monday. So, of course the part we need has to be overnighted and won’t get here till Wednesday, so much for our nice weather window. They say rain and wind from the south Wed. thru Fri., so we’ll probably hang here for a week. Oh well, we need to waste some time anyway, cause we’re not supposed to be below Hatteras til Nov. 1^st.

Heading South and Home

October 6^th 2011, Thurs.

We left Knapps today after a great time with old friends, who we hope to see this winter in Florida. It’s now time to head Jany K south and home. We’re starting by heading a little north to Annapolis with Fred & Ginny (Dreamchaser) who are with us till the weekend, when they head back to Knapps. We got the one mooring that was left and Dreamchaser  anchored in Spa Creek. It was very crowded cause of the sailboat show this weekend. Once settled we got the water taxi into town and walked around, then went to Mangia’s for calzones and then Pussers for Painkillers. We then took the water taxi back to the boats. It was so calm that our boat and the 42 foot sailboat on the mooring next to us kept touching. I think the sailboat was aground and wasn’t swinging like everyone else. We now know to stay away from mooring #71. Fred and Ginny swung and were too close to a dock, so they pulled anchor and moved. NOT A GOOD NIGHT, Bob slept on the sofa to watch so we didn’t hit the sailboat and Fred and Ginny were up making sure the anchor held with all the boats so close. Not much sleep for all our first night out.

Back at Tilghman Island

June 3, 2011, Fri.

We slammed into waves all the way to Tilghman. Northwest winds 15 to 20. Rick & Tina ( Deep Devocean) took off for Annapolis, then Fred & Ginny (Dreamchaser) headed straight up the bay for Knapps Narrows Marina. Kate & Greg ( Grianan), Bob & I headed off to the Choptank to come into Tilghman on Chesapeake (TOC). Very quiet here. We’ll miss our trawler train.

We are now at TOC for a month. It’s a very nice marina, but boring and we rock a lot from boats going by. We would love to have gone to Knapps , but at more than double the price a month, it’s not in the cards. We did get together with all our friends at Knapps over the weekend. Although, Knapps looked a little worn, when compared to the marinas we’ve been to in the last year or so. Then again we left Mears in Oxford for Knapps 16 years ago and things do age, including us. Still it would have been nice to stay at Knapps with our friends for 4 months.

We have traveled another 1100 miles on the ICW. All together with our trip with Banshee and taking Jany K south from Wrightsville Beach, N.C., we have done about 4000 miles on the ICW, plus another 1100 miles when we head back south with Jany K in the Fall. The ICW is losing it’s excitement!

In The Bay

May 31, 2011, Tues.

Nice to be in the Chesapeake Bay again and have open water, except the crab traps. We got to Doziers Regatta Point Marina, tied up, did laundry and hung at the pool. Very Hot!!! Kate and Greg did dinner on the grill in picnic area. We then sat in the Marina lounge after dinner and Sue from the cat Passage came in. We’ve been passing them almost everyday the whole trip. We also met Bud & Elaine on Diamond Girl. They travel the ICW and  write for Waterway Guide.

June 1, 2011 Wed.

A very HOT, HOT day. The wind was behind us and even as it got a little stronger as the day went on, it still was hot. We got into Zahniser,s in Solomons tied up and most everyone went to the pool. Bob cleaned bilges. We went to the Dry Dock restaurant for dinner. We got up thurs. and it was blowing 15 to 20 with gusts to 25 from the NW, so we decided to stay instead of slamming our way up the bay. Bob & I did Taco Salad for everyone for dinner. We had to get someone to come look at the head. We were getting a awful smell from the holding tank. It looks like the air vent is clogged and the mechanic is trying to clear it.

May 29th, 2011

May 29,2011, Sun.

We left Elizabeth City around 8:00 to catch the 11:00 South Mills lock and bridge. We made the approx. 19 miles too early, so we did a crawl. The Lockmaster finally said when we get close he’ll open the lock for us to go in and tie up. It’s a very narrow canal and 4 trawlers waiting isn’t fun. After we locked thru, our plan was to go thru the bridge at Deep Creek and tie to Elizabeths dock for the night. Then go thru Deep Creek lock in the am and on to Waterside in Norfolk. It was very hot, so I called the Trawler Train to see if everyone wanted to keep going and go right to Waterside so we had electric and AC. All the Admirals were in agreement. We had to wait about an hour for the Deep Creek bridge and lock to open, after we did a crawl thru the Dismal Swamp. What a difference from the sailboat, where we pushed to make the locks. Then we had another RR. bridge closing and a highway bridge. Just about an eleven hour day and only 50 miles. Tied up at Waterside around 6:45, showered, went to get something to eat and went to bed. A very long day! We stayed at Waterside the next day, went to the food store and we all went out to dinner.

May 23, 2011, Mon

We went from Joyner Marina in Carolina Beach to Casper Marina in Swansboro, N.C. It was a long day with a lot of scheduled bridge openings, two opened only on the hour, one opened on the half hour and hour and one we could scoot under. We waited 25 minutes for one, almost a full hour for one and just ten miutes for the last one. The wind started really blowing by time we got to Casper Marina, which is an exposed marina, so docking was not fun. Deep Devocean and us were blown into the dock and Dreamchaser had a skinny slip. Waves slapped the hull the whole night, not much sleep after a long day. Fred & Ginny made porks chops for us all, a very nice dinner.

May 24, 2011, Tues.

We went from Swansboro N.C. to Oriental, N.C. and stayed at River Dunes Marina, for two days and we met up with Kate & Greg. This is the marina for those of you who knew JC & Judy, is the place were JC left Oxford for. It is absolutely beautiful, the attention to detail in everything that they built is unbelievable. We all said we could live in the cottages that they rent. Check it out online. I got some laundry done, and went to the pool. JC invited us to the restaurant for a drink, again beautiful and gave us some history of the place and showed us the cottages. A nice relaxing day. We now are four trawlers traveling, so when you call on the radio it would be---Jany K to Dreamchaser, Grianin, and Deep Devocean, we shortened it -----Jany K to the Trawler Train.

May 26, 2011, Thurs.

We left River Dunes, but definitely going back, for Dowry Creek Marina, which is near Belhaven, NC. Nice marina, but again exposed and of course by time we tied up it was blowing probably 15 mph. We needed five fenders to keep us off the dock again. The marina has a cocktail party every night, and then we had dinner on Deep Devocean.

May 27, 2011, Fri.

We went from Dowry Creek to Alligator River Marina. It started really blowing, when we hit the Alligator River. The Pungo Canal was uneventful this trip, other than a 40 foot log alert. Once we went under the Alligator Bridge we had to turn west to get into the marina and boy did we all roll with the wind and waves. Thank goodness it was a short ride. We got to the fuel dock and tied up and got fuel. Grianin went right to their slip on the other side of the marina, where the wind was really blowing. They had a hard time tying up. We moved when we were done fueling, was not easy, the pilings were too high to get a line over, so I had to stand on the flybridge back deck, put the line over the piling then hand it down to Bob while keeping the boat off the other pilings. Kate and I said we just had so much fun docking. Hahaha. Deamchaser tied up fine. Deep Devocean stayed on the fuel dock aafter watching us.

We all got slips at the free dock in Elizabeth City, although nobody was there from town, giving instructions on slip width and inviting everyone to the cocktail party, that used to be the charm of the city. Fred, Ginny, Kate, Greg and us walked to the CVS, walked the town a little. Everybody came to our boat for cocktails. We had the generator running and the AC on. We went to dinner across the street from the marina, Cypress Creek restaurant, very good.

We left  Dock Holidays around 8:15 and arrived at Joyner Marina in Carolina Beach, N.C.  a little after 2:00. We caught the tide right coming up the Cape Fear River and through Snow’s Cut. Once we got tied up, we walked to the beach with Fred and Ginny, and as far as you could see there were trucks parked and people set up right at the back of their truck with their umbrella’s, tents, pets etc. It was very different.  Rick & Tina had us all over for dinner tonight. A very nice evening.

We left Georgetown around 8:30 am and traveled up the beautiful Waccamaw River. The closer we got to Myrtle Beach the more jet skis and weekend warrior idiots. It’s never fun traveling the ICW on weekends between Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Wrightstown, N.C.. We got to Dock Holiday Marina, and walked to the food store, CVS, and West Marine. We also ran into 2 boats from Nettles, Dilligaf and The Last One.

May 18th thru May 20th

May 18, 2011, Wed.

We did about 67 miles to Charleston. We couldn’t get into Charleston City Marina, but got slips at the Ashley Marina, which turned out to be pretty nice. We stayed in Charleston Thursday. The marina had an on demand shuttle into town and also did runs to West Marine at 2:00 pm. We went into town in the morning and walked the market, then took a carriage ride tour, another of my favorite towns. We had lunch at Magnolia’s on East Bay. Rick & Tina went back to the boat after lunch and Fred, Ginny, Bob and I walked past Rainbow Row and along the Battery. When we got back to the boat Richard and Liz Daniels (previous owners of Jany K, then called Sappho) stopped by. We had a very nice visit. It was great hearing  Richard’s stories of the Great Loop and experiences with Jany K aka Sappho. Fred, Ginny, Rick and Tina also came over, another fun night. Looking forward to getting together with Richard and Liz on our return trip south.

We left Ashley Marina, Charleston around 8:00 am. It was hot and mostly cloudy. We got into Georgetown Landing Marina around 4:00. We all needed fuel and their price was $3.74 a gallon, which is hard to believe, but one of the cheapest we’ve seen. We arrived on empty, we now know not to trust the gauges, we took 220 gallons and hold 250 and we also left empty, empty pockets that is! Hahaha!! Bob made goulash  and we had dinner on Jany K for everyone.  Another nice evening.

We went from Brunswick Landing Marina to Kilkenny Marina in Georgia. We crossed a lot of sounds today, a little breezy, but not bad. When we got in and cleaned up Bob made chicken chili and Fred & Ginny, Rick & Tina came over for dinner. A nice evening, tomorrow we’ll leave Kilkenny around 7:00 am, cause we have about a 77 mile day to Beaufort. We did about 66miles today.

May 16, 2011, Mon.

Left Kilkenny and got tied up to the inside of the face dock at Downtown Marina of Beaufort. Rick & Tina went into town and got pizza for us all for dinner, another very nice evening in one of my favorite towns. We stayed in Beaufort Tuesday and walked and shopped in town. Had dinner at Plum’s in town, (Very Good). Got some laundry and boat cleaning done.

A crazy day!!!! We decided to make a decision when we got to Ferandina Beach whether to go on. We listened to the weather, nothing severe, maybe rain. We decided to go 30 more miles to Brunswick Ga., although a little nervous with maybe some wind crossing St. Andrew's sound. We went about 15 more miles after we just passed Kings Bay, we started to hear thunder and then rain.We closed down the glass in the flybridge and were nice and dry. I shut the windows down below, but left the port open in the head, so there was air coming in for the girls. Then it really started, wind blowing, lightning, heavy rain, we couldn't see the bouys. The flybridge glass was steaming up and we couldn't see.We went down below and steered from the inside station and circled with Dreamchaser and Deep Devocean. We had the wipers on and had to turn on the generator and run the ac to clear the windows. During all this we got turned around and Fred called and said we turned 180. I also forgot about the head port was still open, the rug was swimming. We had one lightning strike in the water right in front of us, it shook the whole boat. That was a scary reminder of the Alligator River in Banshee. We could hear maydays and calls to the Coast Guard on 16. Once the rain slowed a little we started making headway again. By the time we got to St. Andrews Sound it started to clear. All turned out well, another learning lesson. Really nice traveling with two other boats.
Oh, and Ginny went  below in Dreamchaser during all this and made Shepards Pie for dinner for us all when we got in to Brunswick. Pretty Great!!!

Fri. May 13, 2011

Today we went from Palm Coast Marina  through St. Augustine to Palm Cove Marina in Jax Beach. A little shallow coming in the marina channel and then a tight turn into a slip. Fred & Ginny are on one side of us and on the other side is Rick & Tina from Canada on Deep Devocean, a 42 Benetau Swift trawler. We first met them in New Smyrna. We all walked to the food store (very hot) and got back, just as some very big raindrops were starting. The rain stopped as soon as we got to the boat. Cocktails on Jany K tonight. So far we've traveled about 232 miles from Nettles this week.

We left New Smyrna Beach and got into Palm Coast Marina around 1:30. Which give us the afternoon to get done a few chores, then cocktails on Dreamchaser. We walked to the European Village to have dinner at Mezzaluna's. A Italian restaurant Bob & I stopped at many times. The weather has been Hot and Sunny.

Wed. May 11,2011

We left Harbortown Canaveral Marina, out the canal to the ICW and started north to New Smyrna Beach. When we crossed through Haulover Canal, which is at the north end of Cape Canaveral, we were invaded by Florida's famous lovebugs. It was like raining bugs. We were glad to get to New Smyrna Beach Marina and shower off the lovebug juice!!!YUK. Bob cooked pork loins on the grill and Fred & Ginny came over for dinner. Our first official dinner guests on Jany K.

Day One, Monday, May 9th

Left Jensen Beach around 11:00 am, by time we closed up the condo and got everything on board. Fred & Ginny with their new trawler Dreamchaser made it across the Okeechobee and are traveling with us. It's so nice to have our good friends with. We did a short day today and got to Vero around 2:30, we got some fuel ( $4.27 a gal.) enough to make it to Merritt Island where fuel is a little more reasonable and then tied to Dreamchaser on a mooring. Fred & Ginny made a delicious dinner for us. A very nice night.
Tuesday, May 10th, We left the mooring at Vero at 8:00 am. We've been having great weather. We traveled about 7 hours to Harbortown Canaveral Marina, about 4 miles east of the ICW. One of the more reasonable places for fuel!!!! $4.02 a gallon (hahahha, Last Nov. we stopped here on our way south and it was $2.93) We'll spend the night here and move north again tomorrow.

Starting North

Our Plan is to start North on May 9th.
